A journey through time
The valley of the Siréniens begins at the Col des Lèques (7 km from Castellane). It is home to a unique paleontological deposit in the world: hundreds of fossilized bones of sirenians, marine mammals ancestors of dugongs and manatees found on site.
These creatures lived here around 40 million years ago, at a time when this part of France was covered by a warm sea. The fossils on display are valuable witnesses to this distant era and offer visitors a unique insight into prehistoric marine life.
This recently redeveloped site is one of the most prestigious in the Haute-Provence geological reserve.
